“Longevity” - Body and mind based practices to support a long, healthy life with Rachel James

Today’s workshop is about adopting physical and practical ways of remaining robust and healthy as our lifespan increases. Loss of strength and flexibility in the body is one of the main causes of loss of independence in later life. Looking after the joints and muscles will enable you to live independently for longer. Stress-related illnesses are preventable if we learn to regulate our nervous system. Ageing is a natural process. We are living longer. An extended lifespan does not mean a healthy life. Longevity is based on 2 major factors. Genetics and Lifestyle. You have no control over your genetic inheritance. You cannot change your actual age. But Genetics accounts for only ¼ of age-related illnesses. This is empowering because healthy lifestyle choices have a far more significant impact than hereditary factors on our life expectancy.

In this workshop, we will look at ways to improve our longevity. The payoff for learning to manage our stress levels, and keep our bodies in good shape is peace of mind and perhaps, a longer, healthier life. The practice will include:

1. Limbering all the joints to remain supple.

2. Correct Lifting Technique to prevent strain & injury to the lower back.

3. Maintaining strength in the major muscle groups

4. The importance of tone in the psoas muscle

5. Getting up and down from the floor

6. The importance of proprioception, variable movement, and awareness of the fascia to avoid injury.

8. Relaxation as the antidote to stress

9. The Importance of the Breath in relationship to the decline in the respiratory system

10. A brief look at posture (Posture & Balance are a separate Workshop)

11. A simple balance practice as an assessment of our longevity age

12. Goal setting

13. Deep relaxation

14. Releasing endorphins, serotonin, oxytocin, acetylcholine, and dopamine
