A course in Pranayama, the art of breathing, with Derek Elliott

Sunday 2pm to 4pm Monthly, starting 9th November and 7th December 2025

Most traditions consider the breath that passes through our bodies as a portal to the deeper experience of being human. The healing quality of breathwork has led to its current popularity. In the yoga tradition the art of breathing has been developed over thousands of years and has left us with a treasure trove of practice.

Essentially, breathing practice is about learning to be aware of the resonant energies that we experience in our persons. Pranayama is the ‘science’ of the life force, ‘prana’ that animates our movement through life. The intention is to run a monthly workshop to help us explore this. The first steps are to understand how we breathe, exploring both our respiratory anatomy and are own personal breath patterns. On this groundwork we will then practice some of the classic pranayamas of the yoga tradition. These are not designed to help us ‘control’ our breathing, but to help open up a landscape where we can learn to live with a deeper awareness of what passes through us. The effects can be profound.

The recommendation is that people who want to commit to developing a breathing practice or building on a current one, become frequent visitors to these sessions. Resources will be offered to give support to a personal practice between sessions. If there are any questions about the suitability for joining, perhaps for medical or other reasons, then please email the Vishuddha centre.

‘Breath is not affected by inflation. It is free. It is not valued in this world. When we learn to value it we find where the Guru is, we find the edge between humanity and God and when we find that edge that is where the answer is.’ Arun Achappe.

Cost £35 per workshop Book here

The sessions are hosted by Derek Elliott who comes from a contemplative background. He is a senior yoga teacher and a great enthusiast of Pranayama practice.
