The jaw, neck and breath are closely interconnected, both structurally and through the nervous system. Tension around the jaw can be felt through the face, head and upper cervical area, while patterns of holding in the neck and ribcage can influence breathing and our sense of ease. These are also areas where stress, concentration and habitual bracing often become particularly visible.
In this workshop, we will explore a more subtle and precise approach to working with the upper body. Combining Thai Yoga Massage with gentle cranial and nervous system-informed approaches, we will look at the relationships between the jaw, face, neck, skull and breath. Rather than treating the TMJ or neck in isolation, we will explore how different areas influence one another and how slower, responsive touch can create space for movement and release.
We will work on:
Exploring the anatomy and function of the TMJ and its relationship with the neck and skull
Working with the jaw, face and surrounding soft tissues using gentle external techniques
Exploring the upper cervical area and the relationship between head and neck
Integrating cranial holds and subtle listening approaches into Thai Yoga Massage
Working with the ribcage, diaphragm and breath as part of patterns of tension through the jaw and neck
Using rocking, movement, stillness and responsive touch to support nervous system regulation
Creating a coherent treatment flow connecting breath, upper body, neck, face and head
This workshop is for floor-based bodyworkers (Thai Yoga Massage, Shiatsu, Ayurvedic massage etc). The majority of the time will be spent practising the techniques with one another, alongside relevant anatomy and opportunities to develop greater sensitivity and precision in your touch. We will also consider consent, pacing and trauma-informed practice when working with the face, head, neck and other potentially sensitive areas.
By the end, you will have a selection of techniques and approaches for working with the jaw, neck, face and head, alongside a deeper understanding of how these areas relate to breath and the wider body. You will be able to integrate this work into your existing treatments rather than approaching the TMJ, neck or cranium as isolated areas.
